The leg extension machine isolates the quadriceps and is one of the most-used machines in any gym. Here is what to look for.

Types of leg extension machines

• Selectorised leg extension: weight stack and pin; the standard choice for commercial gyms.
• Leg extension / leg curl combo: one machine for quads and hamstrings, which saves space in homes and smaller gyms.
• Plate-loaded leg extension: loaded with Olympic plates, preferred by some strength gyms.
• Home attachments: leg extension/curl attachments for benches and home gyms.

What to check

• Adjustable back pad and shin pad so the knee lines up with the machine's pivot for every user.
• Starting-position adjustment to control range of motion, which is important for rehab and beginners.
• Weight stack size: commercial stacks commonly range from about 70 to 135 kg (160–295 lb).
• Footprint and entry and exit space.
• Upholstery and build: commercial machines see thousands of reps a day.
