SECTION 1 — THE SCIENCE OF VO2MAX
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
WHAT IS VO2MAX AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
VO2max — maximal oxygen uptake — is the single most powerful objective measure
of cardiorespiratory fitness and aerobic capacity. First described by A.V. Hill in
1923, it measures the maximum rate at which the body can consume oxygen during
intense, full-body exercise, expressed in mL per kilogram of bodyweight per
minute (mL/kg/min).
Clinically, VO2max is a stronger predictor of all-cause mortality than smoking,
hypertension, or diabetes. In elite sport, it determines the ceiling of aerobic
energy production. In rehabilitation and chronic disease management, it
quantifies functional capacity and guides exercise prescription with a precision
that no wearable tracker or estimation equation can match.
Accurate VO2max measurement requires measuring oxygen consumed (VO₂) breath-
by-breath during progressive exercise. Until now, this required immobile metabolic
carts costing ₹25–40 lakhs, confined to a laboratory. The VO2 Master Analyzer —
weighing just 230 grams — changes this completely.
VO2MAX — MAXIMAL AEROBIC CAPACITY
The maximum volume of oxygen the body can extract and utilise per minute per
kilogram of bodyweight (mL/kg/min). Assessed during a graded exercise test
(GXT) to volitional exhaustion. Reflects cardiac output, pulmonary diffusion
capacity, and skeletal muscle mitochondrial density. Declines ~1% per year
after age 25 without systematic training — making it a critical biomarker for
athletic development, longevity, and healthy ageing.
RMR — RESTING METABOLIC RATE
The energy expended at complete rest — measured by indirect calorimetry.
Accounts for 60–75% of total daily energy expenditure. Standard prediction
equations (Harris-Benedict, Mifflin-St Jeor) carry ±15–20% error. Direct RMR
measurement eliminates this uncertainty, enabling precise caloric prescriptions
for weight management, performance nutrition, eating disorder recovery, and
clinical metabolic assessment.
VT1 & VT2 — VENTILATORY THRESHOLDS
The metabolic inflection points that define physiological training zones. VT1
(aerobic threshold) marks the intensity at which lactate begins accumulating
faster than it is cleared. VT2 (anaerobic/lactate threshold 2) marks the upper
boundary of sustainable high-intensity exercise. Identified through respiratory
exchange ratio (RER) and ventilatory analysis — precision that heart-rate
monitoring cannot replicate.
CPET — CARDIOPULMONARY EXERCISE TESTING
The gold-standard multi-system evaluation of exercise tolerance. Required before
major cardiac surgery, in heart failure management, pulmonary disease staging,
and elite athletic performance profiling. Delivers breath-by-breath gas exchange
and ventilatory metrics simultaneously — providing a complete picture of
cardiovascular, pulmonary, and muscular function under physiological stress.
The Fick Equation
VO₂max = Q × (CaO₂ − CvO₂)
Q = cardiac output · CaO₂ = arterial O₂ content · CvO₂ = venous O₂ content
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
SECTION 2 — PRODUCT OVERVIEW
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
THE VO2 MASTER ANALYZER
The VO2 Master is not a consumer fitness device. It is a professional,
research-validated metabolic analyzer used by sport scientists, coaches,
clinicians, and university researchers in over 38 countries. At 230 grams, it
is the smallest, lightest system of its kind — worn directly on the face during
activity, tethered to nothing.
Every unit is tested on a lung simulator before shipment. A quality-assurance
certificate showing sensor performance and flow measurements is included in each
Nanuk case. This is the same standard applied to laboratory metabolic carts.
WHY NO CO2 SENSOR?
The VO2 Master does not include a CO2 sensor — and this is a deliberate
engineering decision, not a limitation. Compact dual-gas modules suffer from
calibration drift, producing inconsistent and unreliable CO2 readings that
distort metabolic calculations. By focusing on oxygen accuracy and precision
flow measurement, VO2 Master delivers consistent, reproducible results that
coaches and clinicians can trust. VCO2 is derived mathematically from the
precision O2 and flow measurements — the same approach used in several leading
research-grade systems.

HOW IT COMPARES TO A TRADITIONAL METABOLIC CART
Both the VO2 Master and laboratory metabolic carts use syringe calibration for
precision volume measurement — the same gold-standard method. The VO2 Master
adds wireless operation, 8+ hour battery autonomy, and complete portability.
Traditional carts (COSMED Omnia, ParvoMedics TrueOne, Vyntus CPX) cost
USD $25,000–$40,000 (₹25–40 lakhs at MSRP). They require a dedicated room,
calibration gas cylinders, annual service contracts, and a trained operator.
The VO2 Master costs approximately USD $7,500 (MSRP). No gas. No dedicated
room. No service contract. Setup in under 10 minutes. Entire system in a
carry-on case. Same calibration method. Equivalent accuracy.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
SECTION 3 — THREE TEST MODES
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
THREE TEST MODES. ONE DEVICE.
The VO2 Master integrates three clinically and scientifically distinct
measurement protocols in a single wearable unit.
01 VO2MAX — GRADED EXERCISE TEST
Progressive exercise to maximal exertion. Breath-by-breath O2 and flow
analysis to determine maximal aerobic capacity, ventilatory thresholds, and
training zones. Used for athlete profiling, zone prescription, and fitness
benchmarking. Can be performed on any ergometer, treadmill, track, field, or
sport-specific surface.
Output metrics:
VO₂max · VO₂ (mL/kg/min and L/min) · VCO₂ · VE · RER · VT1 · VT2
Training zones · VE/VO₂ · VE/VCO₂ · EqO₂ · EqCO₂ · Heart rate
02 RMR — RESTING METABOLIC RATE
Indirect calorimetry at complete rest. Subject breathes normally through the
mask for 15–20 minutes. Measures resting energy expenditure in kcal/day and
substrate oxidation ratios. Superior to any prediction equation for weight
management, clinical nutrition, and performance nutrition planning.
Output metrics:
RMR (kcal/day) · Fat oxidation % · Carbohydrate oxidation % · Resting RER
Total substrate utilisation · Macronutrient burn ratio
03 CPET — CARDIOPULMONARY EXERCISE TESTING
Full breath-by-breath gas exchange and ventilatory analysis during incremental
or ramp exercise. The most complete non-invasive evaluation of cardiorespiratory
function. The VE/VCO₂ slope — a key CPET output — is an independent predictor
of cardiovascular mortality and post-operative adverse events.
Output metrics:
Peak VO₂ · VE/VCO₂ slope · O₂ pulse · Anaerobic threshold (AT) · OUES
Breathing reserve · Respiratory compensation point · VE/VCO₂ at AT
Exercise oscillatory ventilation pattern

SECTION 7 — GETTING IT RIGHT: SETUP & COMMON ERRORS
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
GETTING ACCURATE RESULTS — WHAT TO KNOW
The VO2 Master delivers lab-equivalent accuracy when set up correctly. Following
setup, calibration, and environmental protocols precisely is critical. VO2 Master
provides industry-leading onboarding content to prevent user errors.
Technical support is available within 24 hours.
Below is the complete guide to avoiding the most common errors.
MASK FITTING
· Select the correct mask size — mask should not touch the stator nut with
pursed lips (too small) and must not leak at the face seal (too large)
· Ensure silicone sleeves are not depressed during fitting — this causes leaks
· Check headstrap orientation before tightening
· Confirm airtight seal around all edges of the face
HEART RATE STRAP FITTING
· Moisten the strap contacts before fitting
· Position correctly on the chest — not too loose
· Check battery charge before testing
ANALYZER ASSEMBLY
· Select the correct user piece (Resting / Medium / Large) and match to app
· Ensure filter is correctly oriented — not folded or contaminated
· Screw user piece all the way in
· Secure with stator nut after fitting to mask
APP SETUP
· User piece selection in app must match physical piece installed
· Enter athlete's correct weight, gender, and age — errors affect calculations
· Protocol must meet minimum step guidelines — too few steps = invalid test
CALIBRATION — MOST CRITICAL STEP
· Complete zero calibration before every session
· Install a clean, correctly oriented filter before calibrating
· Calibrate immediately before the test — not 30 minutes prior
· Calibrate in the same location and environment where testing will occur
· Hit end stops on every pass — timing matters
· Analyzer must face the correct direction during calibration
· Use mask OR calibration seal during calibration — not without either
· Do not attempt on-face calibration on a resting subject with Medium or Large
user piece
ENVIRONMENTAL — CRITICAL FOR INDIA
· Allow 30 minutes for analyzer to acclimatise to testing area temperature
and humidity before calibrating or testing
· Do not test if temperature or humidity changes significantly mid-session
· Maximum outdoor wind/headwind: 20 km/h
· Maximum altitude: 10,000 feet (relevant for Ladakh, Leh, Dharamsala)
· Maximum continuous test duration: 1 hour
· Ensure barometric pressure and humidity are within spec (see user manual)
PERFORMANCE LIMITS
· Maximum athlete ventilation: 220 L/min (relevant for very high-intensity
efforts in elite athletes)
· Minimum 30 minutes downtime after cleaning before next test

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
SECTION 9 — FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
HOW ACCURATE IS THE VO2 MASTER?
The VO2 Master achieves ±1% oxygen accuracy and ±2% flow accuracy when
calibrated with the precision syringe — the same calibration method used in
laboratory metabolic carts. Western University's 2025 peer-reviewed study
(Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports) found a mean VO2
deviation of only 0.6% vs. the COSMED Quark CPET — the global clinical standard.
Multiple studies confirm data within 1–2% of laboratory accuracy across diverse
testing environments and sports.
WHY IS THERE NO CO2 SENSOR?
By design. Compact dual-gas CO2 modules suffer from calibration drift, producing
unreliable and inconsistent readings. VO2 Master achieves reproducible, trustworthy
results by focusing on oxygen accuracy and precision flow measurement. VCO2 is
mathematically derived from these measurements — maintaining data integrity
without the instability introduced by a miniaturised CO2 sensor.
DOES IT REQUIRE CALIBRATION GAS?
No. The VO2 Master requires only a 3-litre precision syringe for volume
calibration before each session. The O2 sensor self-calibrates against ambient
room air. No calibration gas cylinders, no gas storage, no procurement logistics.
This makes it viable for field testing, multi-site research, athlete travel,
and any facility without gas infrastructure.
HOW OFTEN DOES THE O2 SENSOR NEED REPLACING?
Every 12 months or 500 tests — whichever comes first. Galvanic fuel cells deplete
over time as they react with oxygen; this is a fundamental property of the sensor
chemistry, shared by all galvanic O2 sensors including those in traditional carts.
The replacement (SKU: 150-1) is user-performed and includes the sensor and
torque screwdriver. In India's humid climate, maintaining strict desiccant
protocol protects the sensor and preserves its full lifespan.
HOW OFTEN DOES THE DESICCANT NEED REPLACING?
Every 50 tests, or sooner if saturation indicators change. The desiccant
cartridge is included in the Filter Replacement Pack (SKU: 104-1) along with
50 filter discs. In humid environments (Mumbai, Chennai, coastal India, monsoon
season), check desiccant condition more frequently.
CAN IT BE USED FOR CLINICAL CPET IN HOSPITALS?
The VO2 Master has been used in clinical CPET research at Duke University
(JACC: Advances), presented at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual
Meeting, and used in cardiac and pulmonary physiology studies. It generates
automated PDF reports with all standard CPET variables. Institutions should
verify CDSCO compliance requirements for use in diagnostic clinical workflows.
For performance, rehab, and research applications, no additional approvals
are required.
CAN IT BE USED OUTDOORS AND IN THE FIELD?
Yes — within environmental parameters. The VO2 Master is designed for field
performance and has been used in published research on water (canoe paddling),
on mountain bike trails, in military field exercises, on golf courses, and in
cycling and sprinting environments. For India: effective for high-altitude
training (below 10,000 feet), outdoor track testing (wind below 20 km/h),
and rural multi-site research. Allow 30 minutes for the device to acclimatise
to the test environment before calibrating.
CAN IT BE USED FOR SWIMMERS?
Yes. An official VO2 Master swimming protocol is published at:
vo2master.com/blog/how-to-test-swimmers-with-vo2-master
The protocol covers warm-up, structured test sets, and breathing capture
procedures for in-pool testing.

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
VO₂max = Q × (CaO₂ − CvO₂)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
VO₂max = Q × (CaO₂ − CvO₂)
Q = cardiac output · CaO₂ = arterial O₂ content · CvO₂ = venous O₂ content
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
SECTION 2 — PRODUCT OVERVIEW
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
THE VO2 MASTER ANALYZER
The VO2 Master is not a consumer fitness device. It is a professional,
research-validated metabolic analyzer used by sport scientists, coaches,
clinicians, and university researchers in over 38 countries. At 230 grams, it
is the smallest, lightest system of its kind — worn directly on the face during
activity, tethered to nothing.
Every unit is tested on a lung simulator before shipment. A quality-assurance
certificate showing sensor performance and flow measurements is included in each
Nanuk case. This is the same standard applied to laboratory metabolic carts.
WHY NO CO2 SENSOR?
The VO2 Master does not include a CO2 sensor — and this is a deliberate
engineering decision, not a limitation. Compact dual-gas modules suffer from
calibration drift, producing inconsistent and unreliable CO2 readings that
distort metabolic calculations. By focusing on oxygen accuracy and precision
flow measurement, VO2 Master delivers consistent, reproducible results that
coaches and clinicians can trust. VCO2 is derived mathematically from the
precision O2 and flow measurements — the same approach used in several leading
research-grade systems.

HOW IT COMPARES TO A TRADITIONAL METABOLIC CART
Both the VO2 Master and laboratory metabolic carts use syringe calibration for
precision volume measurement — the same gold-standard method. The VO2 Master
adds wireless operation, 8+ hour battery autonomy, and complete portability.
Traditional carts (COSMED Omnia, ParvoMedics TrueOne, Vyntus CPX) cost
USD $25,000–$40,000 (₹25–40 lakhs at MSRP). They require a dedicated room,
calibration gas cylinders, annual service contracts, and a trained operator.
The VO2 Master costs approximately USD $7,500 (MSRP). No gas. No dedicated
room. No service contract. Setup in under 10 minutes. Entire system in a
carry-on case. Same calibration method. Equivalent accuracy.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
SECTION 3 — THREE TEST MODES
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
THREE TEST MODES. ONE DEVICE.
The VO2 Master integrates three clinically and scientifically distinct
measurement protocols in a single wearable unit.
01 VO2MAX — GRADED EXERCISE TEST
Progressive exercise to maximal exertion. Breath-by-breath O2 and flow
analysis to determine maximal aerobic capacity, ventilatory thresholds, and
training zones. Used for athlete profiling, zone prescription, and fitness
benchmarking. Can be performed on any ergometer, treadmill, track, field, or
sport-specific surface.
Output metrics:
VO₂max · VO₂ (mL/kg/min and L/min) · VCO₂ · VE · RER · VT1 · VT2
Training zones · VE/VO₂ · VE/VCO₂ · EqO₂ · EqCO₂ · Heart rate
02 RMR — RESTING METABOLIC RATE
Indirect calorimetry at complete rest. Subject breathes normally through the
mask for 15–20 minutes. Measures resting energy expenditure in kcal/day and
substrate oxidation ratios. Superior to any prediction equation for weight
management, clinical nutrition, and performance nutrition planning.
Output metrics:
RMR (kcal/day) · Fat oxidation % · Carbohydrate oxidation % · Resting RER
Total substrate utilisation · Macronutrient burn ratio
03 CPET — CARDIOPULMONARY EXERCISE TESTING
Full breath-by-breath gas exchange and ventilatory analysis during incremental
or ramp exercise. The most complete non-invasive evaluation of cardiorespiratory
function. The VE/VCO₂ slope — a key CPET output — is an independent predictor
of cardiovascular mortality and post-operative adverse events.
Output metrics:
Peak VO₂ · VE/VCO₂ slope · O₂ pulse · Anaerobic threshold (AT) · OUES
Breathing reserve · Respiratory compensation point · VE/VCO₂ at AT
Exercise oscillatory ventilation pattern

SECTION 7 — GETTING IT RIGHT: SETUP & COMMON ERRORS
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
GETTING ACCURATE RESULTS — WHAT TO KNOW
The VO2 Master delivers lab-equivalent accuracy when set up correctly. Following
setup, calibration, and environmental protocols precisely is critical. VO2 Master
provides industry-leading onboarding content to prevent user errors.
Technical support is available within 24 hours.
Below is the complete guide to avoiding the most common errors.
MASK FITTING
· Select the correct mask size — mask should not touch the stator nut with
pursed lips (too small) and must not leak at the face seal (too large)
· Ensure silicone sleeves are not depressed during fitting — this causes leaks
· Check headstrap orientation before tightening
· Confirm airtight seal around all edges of the face
HEART RATE STRAP FITTING
· Moisten the strap contacts before fitting
· Position correctly on the chest — not too loose
· Check battery charge before testing
ANALYZER ASSEMBLY
· Select the correct user piece (Resting / Medium / Large) and match to app
· Ensure filter is correctly oriented — not folded or contaminated
· Screw user piece all the way in
· Secure with stator nut after fitting to mask
APP SETUP
· User piece selection in app must match physical piece installed
· Enter athlete's correct weight, gender, and age — errors affect calculations
· Protocol must meet minimum step guidelines — too few steps = invalid test
CALIBRATION — MOST CRITICAL STEP
· Complete zero calibration before every session
· Install a clean, correctly oriented filter before calibrating
· Calibrate immediately before the test — not 30 minutes prior
· Calibrate in the same location and environment where testing will occur
· Hit end stops on every pass — timing matters
· Analyzer must face the correct direction during calibration
· Use mask OR calibration seal during calibration — not without either
· Do not attempt on-face calibration on a resting subject with Medium or Large
user piece
ENVIRONMENTAL — CRITICAL FOR INDIA
· Allow 30 minutes for analyzer to acclimatise to testing area temperature
and humidity before calibrating or testing
· Do not test if temperature or humidity changes significantly mid-session
· Maximum outdoor wind/headwind: 20 km/h
· Maximum altitude: 10,000 feet (relevant for Ladakh, Leh, Dharamsala)
· Maximum continuous test duration: 1 hour
· Ensure barometric pressure and humidity are within spec (see user manual)
PERFORMANCE LIMITS
· Maximum athlete ventilation: 220 L/min (relevant for very high-intensity
efforts in elite athletes)
· Minimum 30 minutes downtime after cleaning before next test
